WORD 1 - Ambiguity
For my first word I chose ambiguity as it is something I have not looked at before and I thought it could b interesting. When I think of the word ambiguity, I think of strange and edgy photographs. What I would like to focus on for this word is the scary aspect of it and for the photograph to not make sense or to not have context. I then went on Pinterest I searched for inspiration hence the mood board below.
Some of the photographs below have a pattern of being black and white which essentials an eerie atmosphere and they may also be interpreted differently depending on the viewer. From this mood board, I am intrigued by the portraits and photographs of people and also the editing they look strange.

After creating the mood board, I was inspired by the black and white photographs that don't seem to have any context yet they could be interpreted as anything depending on the viewers view on it. I was also inspired by the darkness and gloominess of the photographs which accentuates the creepiness of ambiguity.
The shoot
In this task I was required to take eerie and unsettling photographs that could be interpreted differently depending on the viewers point of view. This shoot will link to the theme of ambiguity as it shows an vintage aesthetic portraying a different era.
For my shoot I wanted to do a film camera effect and an olden time aesthetic because I thought that it will make the photographs more mysterious. During my shoot I went to the everyman in Muswell Hill as it has lots of vintage furniture hat will help set the mood. As I took the photographs, I has an idea of a couple around their house. I didn't want to give any context so some photographs don't make too much sense. I focused on lighting as there were lamps around which shone only one person and someone else is in the darkness.
For my photoshoot I kept a low brightness as I adjusted the ISO and shutter speed. I also focused on the composition as I sometimes put the subject at the centre of the photograph and sometimes put one more in the middle than the other signifying a dominances to one another.
Finals
For the final photographs, I thought that they needed something to make them more eerie so I decided to photoshop their eyes out of the photograph. This created a contrast of between the living and the dead. As the models look like they are alive and have emotions in their face, the fact they have no eyes makes it scary and mysterious.

The subject I chose to photograph suited the theme as it has an eerie feel to the photographs. My composition helped to support my response to the theme by editing out the eyes from the models and also the film camera effect. I managed the exposure very well. I prioritised my composition with the light as I aimed work with the lighting too. My images express my intentions which were to represent the unknow and unexplained.

Giles Coulon
For my next development, I was inspired by Coulon's work as I found the isolated light in a dark space successful. In his work he focuses on taking photographs of a weak light in a dark room. What is interesting about his work is the use of colour and the contrasting shades that either the light creates or the colour of the wall.

This light – a symbol which is universal, commonplace and yet highly suggestive – became the object of an obsessive fascination.
my shoot
For this response, I wanted to focus on an individual light in a dark space or an isolated lit room. This is why I went around central London at night and took photos of lights in tunnels and in lone apartments.

Third response - contrasting lights
For my third response, I wanted to focus on contrasting colours and lights. I went around Golders Green and took some photographs of the streets as I found that there were lots of light around in the shops and restaurants which I was able to contrast with each other.
I mainly focused on these shops where there were bright lights with more than just one colour. This became simple when I found a shop that had neon coloured lights that also reflected onto the rain which I found it to be a very successful spot.

Finals
For my final I took the pictures that had the most colours involved and put them on to photoshop. I then saturated the colours so they would be more vibrant and stand out.
I believe that my final photographs were successful as my goal for my shoot was met and I was able work with colours. However for some photos there just a single colour which I don't think that was my aim for this shoot.
experimenting 2 - Photoshop
Cyberpunk photography - I came across a photography style which I thought would be good to experiment with my current photos as it a simple editing style. Although in their photos, there is an abundance of neon lights, I wanted to start off by learning how I would to edit like this.
This style is mainly editing thought saturating the photograph and making the colours stand out.

editing
In order to achieve this editing style, I browsed around photoshop to see what tools they have. That is when I found the Camera Raw Filter which I thought would work very well to achieve this reponse.
purple / BLUE
The effects this editing filter works well with my response is has the highly saturated neon lights and also creates a mood for the section illuminated. Purple is also a very good transition colour between whites and blacks which is something. i will want to further use for my later responses. I made sure that there was a balance between each colour so there wasnt a weak white or a grey colour. I did this by sorting out the contrast and brightness of the photograph and also by simply selecting certain colours I wanted to stand out and saturating them.
This colour also creates a futuristic night effect as blue is what I would think of when thinking about technology and modern life.
This colour also creates a futuristic night effect as blue is what I would think of when thinking about technology and modern life.
yellow / green
This colour creates a suburban atmosphere as it seems very warm yet cold as the pale yellow and green is able to brighten up the atmosphere. I do believe that the yellow brings out the dark colours as the colour itself is bright and filled with white. However I do believe that the white is very hidden which would be useful when trying to accentuate and brighten the image.
The green creates an industrial atmosphere as it is what I would think of what the lights would be if they were in low maintenance and not updated. This effect would be used when photographing abandoned lights or neglected places.

red / PURPLE
Red creates a hidden atmosphere as the transition it has it makes it turn to black quickly and it is also a dark colour. This would be useful if I were to photograph tunnels or hidden locations.

fifth response - car park
For this photoshoot I went to a car park in Wood Green where I took aimed to take photographs of the lights in there as I was interested on the contrast between light and concrete. I was also interested in the strip lights in the car parks which I thought would work well with Coloun's work. As I took the photographs I wanted to show the pattern of the continuous lights.
The reason I wanted to concentrate on this is because I wanted work that was closer to Giles Coloun's work with the lonely lights in a dark, dull space which i thought a car park would work really well.
With this shoot I was able to understand the reflecting light against the cars but also the effect it has on concrete which i thought that an interesting approach and effect on it.

finals
In my final photographs after editing and choosing the best ones, I believe that these were able to respond to my aim of this shoot as the continuous pattern of light in the car park was my aim for this response. When it came to the final edit of the photographs, I was able to the saturate the colours of the lights which were not captured by the camera but I also over saturated it slightly. Overall, my final photographs had a good balance between the lights and colours which was my aim.

My composition helped to support my response to the theme by the contrast shoot of lights which set a eerie mood in this car park. I managed the exposure very well as there is a balance of blacks and whites in my photographs. I was able to turn the brightness down and a bit of the exposure in order to get a brilliance in of the lights. Sixth reponse - car park development
For this response I wanted to develop on my last cra park reponse where I aimed to then talk photographs of a car park with no cars as I thought that the lights were ought to be distracting and wanted to focus on the lights and concrete.
This is when I went to Sainsbury's car park in North Finchley where I was able to find the car park faily empty as It was closing time. This allowed me to take photographs of mainly the lights and the concrete which is what I aimed to do in my first response but wasn't able to.
As I took these photographs I thought alot about the composition as I wanted to find a way to accentuate the continuous lights. I found that the straight on view of the light was a good positioning of them. I also believe that the tubes allowed there to be an interesting reflection to the lights as it was subtle yet successful to the photographs.

editing
During the process of editing, I used photoshop where I mainly focused on the colour balance, brightness and contrast where I was able to bring out the true colour of the light and show the contrast of the depth of field of the photographs.
I chose to turn up the blues as I though it would be a good transition between the whites and blacks of the photograph. For some of the photographs I was able to use the same setting but for others, I might have turned the contrast up depending on how bright the photographs is when I originally took it. Overall, This editing turned out to be successful for this response. |
Finals
After editing my final photographs, I found them to be success to the response I was aiming for as they have an eerie atmosphere to them which is what I intended to do. Although this is simply just one colour, I want to further develop different colours in different shoots.

seventh response - ATMOSPHERE
For this response, I wanted to to carry on with the same theme as I thought about where I could take it next. I went around different areas such as Hampstead and Camden as I could find a contrast of atmospheres between the two.
As I thought about where I could take this project to next, I realised how lighting changes the mood and atmosphere of a place. for example during the shoot in Hampstead, I found that certain lights created a more homie and warm setting. This is effective when taking photographs that represent things such as original and preserved places. However, in Camden you are able to find more neon lights through the main road and colours signifying youth and a modern city.
This understanding allowed my to think where I could take this project as I want to focus on how light is able to change the mood and meaning of place, changing the colours and focusing the warmth of lights creates.

Hampstead
My aim white taking these photographs is to show a home like atmosphere with warm colours which create a calm mood allowing the viewer to feel what it would be like to walk through these streets. As I was trying to look for lights that didn't look very modern as they would typically produce a cool atmosphere and with some of the photographs I took, they tend to be warm lights that would effect onto the ground and around the street.
I used the same techniques as the last response.
For these photos I turned down the brightness so the lights would be vibrant and show their true colour. I also turned down the exposure in order to get a slight high contrast so there was the balance between black shadows and the white centre light.

Camden
For these photographs, I aimed to look for shops that a bright neon light but I wanted for it to have a contrasting colour with it which would create young and modern atmosphere mainly focusing on cool lights. As I walked through Camden at night, it was quite difficult to find shops that still had their lights on as they were shut. However with the shops I photographed, they had their lights on and some had bright contrasting neon coloured lights.
While I was taking these photographs I turned the exposure down and kept the brightness intact as the I wanted the lights to still be bright but i wanted them to be brighter than the surroundings.

Experimenting 3 - studio
As I thought about how I was going to move forward with my project, I wanted to bring back my word ambiguous by making my photographs eerie again. I tried to think on how my current photographs could mix with eeriness as colours don't give a mysterious atmosphere so I wanted to experiment the contrast of colours and eeriness by placing a silhouette in my photographs which is something I had done in an earlier response but didn.t carry it on as I didn't find the photos to be affective. However I would like to bring it in again and through the use of studios experimentation, I will work out thing I need to consider before going out and taking the shoot.
To being this idea, I want into a studio and experimented how the light should be hitting the person in order to get a silhouette effect and found that when the light is behind of the person, I creates a perfect silhouette but I found it more interesting when there is a bit of the persons face showing as it creates more mystery of just seeing half of their face.
As my model was wearing textured clothing, I think it made it seem like a person as the light reflected on sections of the coat which were exposed. This is something I am going to consider during my shoot.
On the final photograph, I experimented with the camera focus as the combination of bright coloured lights and a dark lone figure will create a mysterious, eerie effect to it.

After my last experiment, I wanted to include the studio silhouettes onto the photographs I have already taken. I did this through the use of photograph as I cropped out the person and copied and pasted them onto them. I also edited them so they had the same lighting and colour on them.
finals
For the final results of this experiment, I was able to think of different locations and places in the photograph the person could stand in which position and where to be facing. This allowed me to understand if the person is at the centre of the photograph, it seems eerier and make the viewer focus on the subject more rather than it seeming like a random member in the public.

eight reponse - shilouette
After experimenting in what different ways I could include a silhouette in my photographs to achieve an eerie effect, I wanted to take the final photographs.
In this shoot I went to Camden as I thought the photographs there were successful. As I took these photographs I looked for shops with lights and I also went to locations I went to last time. As I took these photos, I considered that the colours of these photographs can be exaggerated and saturated. This meant that when I took the photos, I was limited in locations and was able to photographs white lights and later edit them in colours.
The experimenting allowed me understand on how light reacts with a person and how a silhouette is created, this means that when I prepped to include a model, I made sure they wore dark clothes, textured clothing, large size and that they had their hood on.

editing
When it came to finally editing the photographs, I made sure to use the same techniques as the previous responses. I mainly focus on colour balance, brightness and contrast and saturation.
While editing each photograph, I wanted have an even amount of colours. I aimed to do 2 purple, 2 blue, 2 green and 2 yellow themed photographs. This was easy to achieve as some photographs already have assigned colours so it was simple to enhance the colours. However for some there was simply a white light. Although this was easy to manipulate, this had the risk of looking unrealistic. However in my opinion these came out just as I aimed.
Finals
For my final photographs, I believe that I was able to achieve the goal of my response. I think that they actually came out futuristic and modern caused my the neon lights. However the eeriness is still felt through the photographs. I think that this is allows me to branch out into a further development for my future reponses.

final piece
For a development, I wanted to see all of the photographs put together in shade order. For this first one I took the photographs and got 2 colours and placed them on top of each other and carried that along the canvas. I also wanted the darker and the more contrasted photographs at the top row and the lighter ones at the bottom row.
For this one I wanted to see the photographs in a strip canvas as if it was a story line which I thought was successful as the colours gradually change across.
Summary so far:
For this collage I took all of the photographs I have taken them and placed them all on a canvas in the same colour order as the previous.
