Project 1 - Brutalism
Brutalist architecture is a movement in architecture that flourished from the 1950s to the mid 1970s, descending from the modernist architectural movement of the early 20th century. The term originates from the French word from 'raw' in the term used by Le Corbusier to describe his choice of material béton brut (raw concrete).
Task
Capture the structure of brutalism Visit one or more of the brutalist buildings listed below and experiment capturing the structural makeup of brutalist architecture. When taking your images consider the composition tips listed: ·Brunel University Lecture centre · Brunswick Centre · Royal College of Physicians · Centre Point · The Barbican · Trellick Tower · Southbank Centre and National Theatre · Camden Town Hall Annexe · Alexandra Road Estate · Institute of Education · Ministry of Justice · St Giles Hotel |
|
A good start but could you go a little more into the historical context of the movement
first artist response
Simon Phipps
Phipps' work mainly focuses on presenting different perspectives of a building, interior and exterior. He did this by placing the camera at different angles which revealed shapes and forms of the building that you may not see usually. His work relates to brutalism as the buildings in the photographs are usually concrete buildings and he makes sure to show off the shadows and shapes that the building creates.

contact sheet
For my response, I decided to go Hendon Hall Court and walked around the building capturing different perspectives of the building and showing its shapes and form and made sure to include some negative space in some photographs.
finals
Form/shape
The objects within images can be broken down into series of basic shapes. Practise framing a scene to create new shapes. I then edited them in black and white to show shadow and shapes more clearly.
Negative space
When focusing on negative space, you need to consider the overall balance of the picture composing the shapes that surround your focal point.
Perspective
When taking a photograph consider the angle that you are photographing from. Also use the lines of the building to draw the viewer to a specific focal point
The subject I chose to photograph suited the theme as it includes a brutalist building and shoed different perspectives of the building. My composition helped to support my response to the theme by representing shape/form, perspective and negative space techniques I managed the exposure very well. After taking the photographs I edited them by adding and black and white filter and moving around the contrast and exposure. For some photographs I used a different lens which made the building look taller and powering. I prioritised aperture to manipulate depth of field. My images express my intentions which were to present brutalist buildings like the artist does.
The subject I chose to photograph did not necessarily fit the brief as it look grey compared to Phipps' work. Next time I should use a different editing technique so you are able to see more whites.

Well done an excellent set of images that really capture the essence of the buildings but also the required compositions
Second artist response
Thomas Danthony
Danthony's work focused on simplifying brutalist photographs and including black, greys and white. He did this by a computer software but in my response, I will be using photoshop.

For the creation of these photographs, I will be using the photographs I took for Simon Phipps and will be simplifying them on photoshop.

This is a step by step progress of the creation of my Thomas Danthony response:

I managed the edit these photographs with their simplified colours which made my work look like the artists'. My images express my intentions which were to make the image look simplifies and flat.
The subject I chose to photograph did not necessarily fit the brief as it was not interesting enough as the editing was not like the artists'. Next time I should spend more time editing so its more detailed.

project 2 - Break in the structure
Thomas Kellner
Keller's work focuses on taking digital photographs of a structure and taking different photographs of different sections of the building. Then he would take the contact sheet and sort them out so they would match up. This then created a distorted photograph of the building as some photographs would be tilted to an angle and wouldn't watch up to the other photographs.
These photographs would be of famous structures and buildings so when the final image came together, it was identifiable to the viewer.

For the final edits, I used the photographs I took for the brutalism response and use the editing steps shown above.
The subject I chose to photograph suited the theme as it met the response level of Kellner's work. I was able to edit the photograph successfully that fitted his work.
However, I would like to have more layers of the building with different angels to show other angles and perspectives of the building.

Project 3 - twisted structure
Nicholas Kennedy Sitton / David Copithorne
Their work is focused on taking landscape photographs where there are buildings in the photograph for example down a road with buildings on either sides. Then they got the photograph and twisted it in a circular motions creating an illusion through their photographs.

I believe that in my response, I was able to present Nicholas' work accurately however I believe the editing could be better.
project 4 - structure of architecture
For this response, we focused on camera sections and changing the ISO, shutter speed and aperture in order to expose the photograph correctly. In order to achieve this, we must consider the effects that this has on the photograph.
- ISO controls the noise and graininess of the photograph. This is written by 100s. The larger the number gets, the brighten the image gets but the grainer (more noise) the photograph gets which can be an issue. - Shutter-speed controls for how long the lens is open for. This is measured by per second. e/g 1.8th of a second or 1/500th of a second. This causes the photograph to be blurry the higher the is (1/8) and the less motion blur the lower the fraction is (1/1000). This also affects the brightness the higher the fraction is as it lets in more light. - Aperture controls the focus of a subject and depth of field. This is measured by F-stop (f/1.4-f/16). The higher the number is, the smaller the size of the whole of the lens is. The smaller the hole means light comes in through the middle of the camera allowing the image to be in full focus. However if the hole is bigger, light will be coming in the camera through all of the lens which will cause the background the be blurry as the lens is curved exposing the sides that the camera can focus. The lower the number, the brighter it is. |
When taking a photograph, when looking through the lens, you can see an exposure meter which is the camera telling you whether the photograph is going to be not exposed enough, too exposed or perfectly exposed. When the arrow is in the middle, it is telling you it is perfectly exposed. When the arrow is to the left, it is on minus numbers, it is under exposed and when it is on the right, it is on the positive numbers, it is over exposed.
This arrow moves around when you change your settings like the ISO, aperture, shutter speed and also the image you are going to capture noting the lighting, brightness or darkness and how clos or far the subject is. |
cinema
For our task, we were told to explore these settings when taking photographs of buildings. We were taken to a cinema (the Muswell Hill Everyman) and to look at the architecture.
F stop - f/3.5 Exposure time - 1/60 sec ISO speed - ISO-200
F stop - f/3.5 Exposure - 1/50 sec ISO speed - ISO-200
F stop - f/3.5 Exposure - 1/50 sec ISO speed - ISO-200
F stop - f/3.5 Exposure time - 1/125 sec ISO speed - ISO-200
church and cinema comparason
For this task, we were then taken to to the local church and took photograph similar to the cinema photographs since they both have the same ideas of worship and in a church you sit down and face forward and worship god and the priest and in the cinema you sit in a room, face forward and worship the film you are watching.
Comparison 1
The comparison in this photograph is the projection of light in the room. In the cinema, you light is presented by a lamp as it is a dark environment allowing the movie to be watched. However in the church, light is presented by windows and exterior. However in this room they have the same concept as it is where you sit which someone and share time together.

project 5 - Field works
Sanna Kannisto
Sanna Kannisto's work focus on taking photographs of flowers and birds on top of the stick to represent nature. Her work is interesting because when she presenting the nature, she does it in a scientific way as she shows the scientific pole used to hold up the flowers. This is unique because photographers tend to not include props such as flashlights or studio lights in their photograph as they want to make sure the photograph's main focus in the subject. However, in Kannisto's work she makes sure that the scientific pole is visible which brings light to the scientific response in her photographs. Some significant key things you are able to see in these photographs are the backdrop, scientific stand and the nature being held up. I would like to make sure I also include these things in my photographs. |
my shoot
While creating these photographs, I managed to take the photographs including the scientific pole and nature. However on the day that I took, it was a grey day so the sun didn't complement the station creating the back drop to not be as white as I wanted it to be. When selecting my final photographs, I went to photoshop and edited them to be brighter.

project 6 - structure in nature
Myoung ho lee
Myoung ho lee started to photograph nature by capturing his native trees in front of a large white sheet which isolated it from the rest of the field or forest. He makes sure to show the background behind the tree by staking photographs of showing the surroundings and the white canvas. This then creates a beautiful representation of nature's individualism.

My second strand - Maria Svarbova
Svarbova's work is based on the repetition of people. Her origin series was focused on swimming students. There are some significant patterns such as colours, the model's poses and the reflection on the water. Her work is based in a pool as it works best with the reflection pattern.

For my response, I want to take photographs in my schools sports hall which has a reflecting surface. I will also consider the colours and the colour contrast between each other.
First response -
In my first response, I focused on a single pose where I would focus on repeating it multiple times. I tried to do poses such as simple looking forward and standing on the side. When it came to editing, I multiplied the model and tried to make the photograph more interesting by place someone as the odd one out which might have created a more realistic feel to the image.
Second response
For my second response, I wanted to focus on the actual sport. I focused on basketball where I photographed the model to be playing which a team of herself. I instructed the model to make different movements that they would do when playing basketball. I tried to be cautions as they needed to be in different positions of the area as if she was standing on just one place, each person would overlap and the photograph would look unrealistic. I also included different coloured tops so they would be identifiable different teams.

Development 1 : Andrea Gursky
In Gursky's work, there is a clear pattern of colours and structure as the repetitive nature of the windows. He makes sure that there is a visible pattern between the straight lines. The landscape photographs and the large format architecture, are usually taken from a high view so it gets a straight on view making sure the lines are symmetrical and the same distance from each other.

This photograph is seen to be an apartment building or may be an office building as there seems to be lots of people. I find this photograph to be significant as you are able to see through the windows and the viewer is able to see each person as if they each have their own personal life. On the photograph on the right, Gursky has zoomed into only a few windows exposing the people inside and allows the viewer to view what they are doing better.

These photographs seem to different as there are different significant elements presented like colour. This composition is significant as the straight lines are complimenting these colours by dividing them

In my response, I want to incorporate Gursky's patterns of colour and symmetrical lines.

For my second strand I focused on repetition of building's structure. My main focus of my response was the repetition on pattern through a building. I went out and took some photographs which I thought I could have used and when into photoshop and changed around the perspective and structured out the patterns. I think the editing went well but i would hav liked the photographs to look more realistic but I am happy with the overall product.

Development 2 -Marcus Lyon
Lyon's work consists of taking photograph of a landscape where there are already multiple buildings. He then takes each building and spreads them out through the landscape which creates a surreal feeling of a city scape. What is significant about his work is the unnoticeable multiplication of the buildings. The composition of each photograph consists of a high perspective of the landscape where you are able to see the depth of the area.

Which taking photographs for this response, my main focus was to take photograph on top of a building in order to see the large landscape. However this was difficult to do to I though taking simple landscapes would work.
Evaluation:
For the first development of my artist response, I mainly focused on the multiplication of buildings which I thought Lyon was a good artist to respond to. For the first photograph I edited, I think that the final product was a similar piece to his work. However in my second response, I I think I created a more accurate response as there are buildings filling up the whole image.

Evaluation:
The subject I chose to photograph suited the theme as it involves repetition of the subject. My composition helped to support my response to the theme as I stayed still in one position in order for the editing to go smoothly. I prioritised my shutter speed to capture movement and frozen moment.
The subject I chose to photograph did not necessarily fit the brief as it was not interesting enough as I believe that if there would have an adequate costume for the sport, it would have been a better response. Next time I should make a dress code .

Development 3 - Anastasia Savinova
Savinova's work consists of taking photographs of buildings and houses stacked on top of each other creating a large building. The neat stacking of the building creates a smooth creation of a house. This is interesting because the positioning of each image represents windows, doors, roofs etc. I decided to do this artists as their work links smoothly into Lyon's work.

Daniel Garay
When researching surreal architecture photography, I came across Daniel Garay. His work consists of taking apart levels of a building and making them float above the actual building. I though this was interesting because it almost looks the building is made my stacks and places on top of each other. Each piece is either rotating towards the structure or doing directly being fitted to place.

my shoot
For my shoot I mainly focused on taking photographs of building at a low perspective so the layers were easily visible.
Evaluation
The subject I chose to photograph suited the theme as it follows an abstract and surreal feel to modern architecture. My composition helped to support my response to the theme by the subject looking down and I would look up to the building in order for the layers to be noticeable. I made sure to put the building so that its in the middle of the image and so there is also space on top of the building so there is space to put the extracted sections. My images express my intentions which were the smooth placements of each levels of the building.
